How to Cut Upholstery Foam

When making cushions, the uphlostery foam often needs to be cut to size. Foam cushioning can be cut using these simple methods to get the custom size  uphlostery foam needed.

First measure the upholstery foam to see if it will fit the cushion or pillow it will be placed in. It is necessary to cut the foam pad a little large for a stiffer pillow or cushion. For example if the cushion is a 12 inch circle, cut the upholstery foam to a 13 to 14 inch circle. Also high density foam like memory foam doesn't need to be that much larger. Then mark the upholstery foam where it needs to be cut using the marker. Make a pattern out of paper[paper?:paper sample maker cutting machine] to mark around or use a yard stick for straight lines. If the foam pad is for homemade cushions or pillows, then use the same pattern they were made from for marking the upholstery foam. Polyurethane foam for cushions is easy to mark. Last, use an electric knife to cut through the upholstery foam pad or use a razor knife.
