Cork Packaging Influences Australian Wine Industry

Portavin is Australasia’s largest independent wine services supplier, specialising in bottling packaging[packaging?:DCP-H series packaging sample cutter plotter].  The number of packaging bottles running down Portavins' lines destined for China has spiked dramatically over the last 12-18 months, as this promising wine market opens doors for Australian wine.  According to Austrade, bulk Australian wine exports to China increased by 51% last year while packaging bottled wine increased by 24%.

In line with this increased volume of wine being exported to China, Portavin has noticed a return to packaging bottling wine under cork. The Chinese market is very traditional, and continues to favour the cork closure.  The amount of wine sealed under cork at Portavin Melbourne is still a small percentage of overall production, however the segment is growing and is noticeably more active than it has been for a number of years.  This is particularly relevant to wines in the $60+ price bracket, which are now largely under screwcap closure for domestic markets.

Portavin assists clients in finding an export market for their excess wine, as it seeks to fill regular enquiries from companies exporting to China.  Portavin puts the whole package together…as well as bottling and packaging, containers can be packed onsite at Portavin, then delivered to the wharf with required documentation.
