Pop up pattern maker

Pop up cards provide a surprising feature in the center of the card that pops out toward the viewer when he opens the piece.Nearly any shape can be turned into a pop up. Your options for this distinct type of card are endless. Handmade pop up cards look much more difficult to create than they actually are. Once you master the art of drawing the pop up card pattern, you'll be on your way to unlimited creative greeting card options.

1.Fold a piece of plain white paper[paper?:paper sample maker cutting machine] in half. Draw half of a symmetrical image on the card, with the unfinished side of the image butting up against the folded edge of the card. Try beginning with an easy shape such as a diamond, which could become the beak of a bird in the finished card.

2.Trace over the shape several times with a pencil until it is very dark. Fold the card over in the other direction and press the penciled image firmly onto the other half of the card. When you unfold the paper, the pencil should have worn off on the blank half of the paper enough for you to go over it and draw the other symmetrical half of the shape.

3.Cut the shape on one or two edges to allow it to pop out. For most shapes, cutting along the bottom and top while leaving the sides intact will be the easiest way to get the shape to pop out. For the diamond-shaped mouth, make a single horizontal cut through the center of the diamond from one corner to the next, where the mouth will open. Leave the card folded in half for this step, and cut through both halves of the card at once.

4.Fold in the intact edges of the shape, making a strong crease in the paper. Then return the shape to its original position.

5.Unfold the card and gently push the shape outward, folding along the crease made in the previous shape. Fold the card in half again, with the shapes pushed toward the center of the card.

6.Open the card from the opposite side to see the shape popping out. Lay the card flat and draw additional images on the card as desired. For the diamond beak shape, draw a face around the protruding beak.

7.Cut a second sheet of paper to the same size as the first and fold it in half. Glue this page to the back of the pop up page with rubber cement to complete your card.
